The combinatiorial theory of block designs is concerned with certain arrangements of a finite set and also with questions of regularity, symmetry, and morphisms of these arrangements. It involvis techniques from such fields as number theory, algebra and geometry. This is the first expostion of the theory of quasi-symmetric designs, that is, combinatorial designs with at most two block intersection numbers. The authors aim to bring out the ineraction between designs, finite geometries and strongly regular graphs.
The book starts with basic, classical material on designs and strongly regular graphs and continues with a discussion of some important results on quasi-simmetric designs. The later chapters include a combinatiorial construction of the Witt designs from the projective plane of order four, recent results dealing with a structural study of designs resulting from Cameron s classification theory on extensions of symmetric designs, and results on the classification problem of quasi-simmetric designs. The final chapter presens connections to coding theory. This book will be valuable reading for researchers and students in design theory, coding theory, graph theory and group theory.
